Seventy years of NATO: Is the Alliance still needed?

The April 2019 edition of the IRMO Brief, written by Krševan Antun Dujmović, deals with the development of North Atlantic Alliance in occasion of marking its seventieth anniversary. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the North Atlantic Alliance has accepted thirteen countries from Eastern Europe in several waves of enlargement, and NATO arrived on the border of the Russian Federation. Strengthening of Russia and its expanding energy policy, along with NATO’s ambitions for further enlargement, have created new antagonisms on the Old Continent. This analysis explains how NATO can overcome divisions among its member states and secure its irreplaceable role in the security architecture of Europe.
